Thematic Option, or TO since it is known on campus, is just a system that replaces USC’s General Education curriculum by having an core curriculum that is interdisciplinary. While not a humanities program per say, TO is very reading and writing intensive, so students deciding on this scheduled system should be ready for this kind of rigor. This program is probably not for you if you don’t LOVE reading and writing. Like FSH, TO provides students having a smaller learning environment which permits greater conversation amongst pupils and faculty.
Aaron Brown, Associate Director of Admission, participated in TO when he had been a pupil at USC. Aaron says that TO ‘became a good way to shrink this big institution up to a more manageable size’ and states it provided him with a good community of like-minded students. Aaron says their favorite TO course was Core 102 that he took their semester that is first of themed ‘The Hero’s Journey.’ He says one instance that stands apart is as soon as the class invested a period that is entire just two paragraphs of Heart of Darkness. Aaron claims it was a ‘wow, this is college’ moment for him. Aaron also got a trip to Disneyland out from the experience during his Core 101 course whenever they were studying Mickey Mouse as a cultural icon. He notes that as a freshman new to Los Angeles, ‘these had been invaluable opportunities to explore this great city.’

We now have invested the last few months reading thousands of files, we are very excited to meet all of you so we are primed for some student interaction and! While we’m sure that there will be happening that is plenty campus, I wanted to emphasize some things about this beautiful city that I enjoy. I have already been residing in la for the last 9 years and you may still find things I haven’t done, but this is a personal ‘Must See’ list that I’ve compiled for LA visitors. You are hoped by me enjoy!
1) Let’s Take A Ride: For my everyday commute, we just take the Metro Expo Line to work. Since its opening in Spring 2012, USC students happen able to just take this train to Culver City in western LA or to Downtown. I invite you to do the same! Culver City is a place that is great restaurants, museums and theaters. If you ride the Expo Line going in the opposing direction, it’s possible to enjoy LA Live- house of the Nokia Theatre, the GRAMMY museum and many more restaurants. Right door that is next The Staples Center, where the Lakers play ( and some other NBA team that no one caresabout). From there, you can feel free to explore the rest of Downtown LA and all sorts of it has to offer! There are three stops near our campus it is therefore really accessible. The fare is cheapand it takes 20 minutes or less getting to either destination. Talk about a great way to avoid traffic!
2) Why see the world, when you’ve got the BEACH!: I really couldn’t have a ‘Must See’ list about LA without mentioning the coastline! Venice is often popular with your visitors because of most of the social people watching you are able to do. I choose less crowded beaches like Playa or Santa Monica, but whatever perhaps you are within the mood for, you can’t visit Los Angeles without hitting the waves!
3) pay attention!: our thing that is favorite LA is the total amount and variety of live music you can expose you to ultimately. We love going to big concerts at my favorite place, The Greek Theatre, to view musicians like Jason Mraz or Phoenix. If I wish to choose one thing more intimate, i will constantly always check out up and coming singer/songwriters at places like place 5 or The Witzend.
4) An Elevated Rested Place: we wasn’t going to include restaurants in this post, but this is a new favorite, so I had to create an exception. Perch restaurant is a French inspired bistro located in the heart of downtown l . a .. It bears its name mostly you an unobstructed 360 degree view of the city because it sits on a rooftop and gives. I highly suggest using your family here for Sunday brunch with some music that is live
5) A Lesson ever sold: Olvera Street could be the part that is oldest associated with town. Simply take the Expo Line from campus and then the connecting line to Union Station. In about 50 % an hour, you may find yourself surrounded by historic structures and a traditional Mexican style plaza with plenty of places to consume and shop. Invest a couple of hours appreciating the beauty that is architectural learning about its traditions.
